Family and I were on a recent road trip. We stopped at a rest area near Amarillo, TX. There was the biggest spider I've ever seen with my own eyes that wasn't in a cage on the ground trying to get into the door of one of the buildings. I was concerned this guy might bite an unsuspecting traveler so I was going to smash it with my shoe. I was shocked by the reaction of the small crowd that assembled to see it. It was as if I was thinking of re-killing Harambe the Gorilla.
So, instead of trying to kill it, I tried moving it with my shoe. Big mistake. This thing absolutely stunned me with its ability to shimmy away from my shoe and onto the door frame. I was so thankful it went away from me and not toward me or it had me dead to rights. Honestly, shocked by the speed in which it got from the ground to the door frame and up. Incredible.
Crowd kept growing while people had cell phones out. Finally, the maintenance worker there put it inside his dustpan where we happened upon another one on the asphalt by the parking spots.
Never knew Texas had spiders quite like this and was very surprised nobody wanted me to smash it. If I'm alone next time, I won't hesitate to kill it because I value human safety more than I do an arachnid but not that crowd at the rest area.
EDIT: It won't allow me to post a video I took of the spider. Will see if I can do a pic instead.
