Annual weekend spring demo is here. I spent Friday from 1-4 there hitting a bunch. Today was mulch, maybe get there tomorrow morning until they close at 11. Friday was crappy cold weather...grey and 45. People there with winter clothes and mittens.
Happy to say, nothing stood out.
Callaway Apex mb/ project X 6.0 was nice. Loved everything about it. Great feel. Would I get them? No...because if your swing is a bit off, forget it.
Callaway Apex cf/ Elevate 95 just didn't feel good at all for me. High and right.
Taylormade p790 was nice with the dg120 but not so nice with the 105. Felt no different than the Taylormade 760 forged. Ball flight with both were mid high, easy to hit. I ought the 760 would be tougher than the 790 but it wasn't. Didn't notice any crazy distance.
Ping i200 feels like a forged iron. Great club. Hit it with the AWT shaft
Ping I blade/ Ping zz65, project X 6.0. Liked both shafts in it. Prefer the PX. Nice high flat ball flight. Great iron, looks nice at address. You notice the lack of offset after hitting the i200.
Ping i500/ PX lx6.0, PX 5.5 and 6.0. For a hollow head it felt like the i200 and I blade to me. Also sounded like the Taylormade p790. Solid. When I hit this inside over the winter, it sucked. Performed best with the px6.0 or even the 5.5. Ball flight was higher than any other iron I hit though.
So with irons, there is nothing that would get me out of my Ping ie1 irons. I do wish I had a heavier shaft though.
Cobra f9/ Atmos black TS 6s. Meh. Ball flight was a bit low. They had more than one Trackman at most of the booths which is nice. I was getting weird numbers...had my club head speed at 101 but my ball speed at 155, spin at 2300 and launch at 10. The ball speed and club head speed numbers make no sense when doing the math for smash factor.
Taylormade M5...the guy there was cool, had me trying a few different shafts on Trackman. Got more ball speed from the M5. Felt better than the f9 too. I hit the HZRDUS black which is very tip stiff and I knew that. I hit some and the guy said I needed less tip stiffness. Even Flow black was next. Numbers came up, got more spin. He was saying because I have a positive AOA I don't need a lot of tip stiffness. Next I hit one of the stock offerings, the non pro Tensei CK Orange. Good numbers, little better feel than the even flow. This was all just leaving the weights wherever on the head. Again though, weird club head speed of 103 but ball speed almost 160.
Callaway...yeah...no. I did hit the Subzero with the Smoke shaft. Spin was too low and since it was 4 pm, I was just too tired to bother getting something else.
Ping g410. Hit the Tensei Orange non pro like the Taylormade. It was great, not OMG...but good. No Trackman here...she never has one. The other people leave it out and on so u can look at the numbers yourself which is cool. I also put the Graphite design Tour AD iz 6x and 6s in it. The 6x was a bit low. I did hit it in the 9, not the 10.5 but that's my bad. I hit the 6s in the 10.5 because I wanted it to be like the g400max 10.5/ad iz6s I see at Golf Galaxy. I did hit it really good....makes me want to go back and get the g400max/ad iz now....especially after hitting the yellow. That shaft is a firm, not stiff tip so I get the high launch and the spin is very low....plus the 6s feels great.
G400max/ HZRDUS yellow. 10.5 and the 75 gram version. This head just makes me fall in love. Long ( I think) high draws.
So, like with the irons, I'm not ready to sell of the M2 driver for a $600 club. If I had to spend the money, I'd stick with the M5 just because it's the same adapter as the M2. For the most part, they all perform the same. The g400max though just has something about it...it's got the "kavorca". At least it looks like it does. So I might just go pick up the one at golf Galaxy...
