In a league that increasingly favors the offense how is it fair that team that gets to go on offense first due to the win of a coin toss can close out a game without the other team touching it? If we want fairness in reviews like the Nickell Robey-Coleman travesty, shouldn't we want that same fairness determining winners in OT playoff games?
The Patriots vs. the Chiefs 31st ranked defense was determined via coin flip. The Patriots didn't get the pleasure of Mahomes in return due to a coin toss. Yes, I know, the Chiefs "could've" stopped them or limited them to a FG, but as I said, this league favors offense. Having to put your defense out due to a coin toss is a patently unfair proposition.
The NFL and NFLPA are concerned about player safety and amount of games/time spent on the field.
Here's what I would've loved to see in place of a coin toss:
Give each team the ball at their own 25 with 2 minutes on the clock and two timeouts. Whichever team scores the most points, or advances the ball the furthest wins. If tied, repeat until broken.
The only issue I see with the above it would limit run heavy teams like Baltimore. Two minutes could be increased to 4 minutes or even 5, but then in case of ties, the safety issue comes into play.
