Everyone is different.
Maybe the guys he was with were de-lofting the club during the swing? Maybe they have more lag and can get the head moving faster through the ball? Maybe they are using a ball that goes further? Maybe less/more spin on the ball so it is optimized for their swing?
Way too many variables to do comparisons.
I was in a scramble at a short course this past weekend. Playing with my parents and my wife. One par 3, I hit my tee shot and everyone was amazed at how high it was. I shrugged my shoulders and said "what do you expect? I was only hitting a gap wedge". They were all blown away by that, because for my wife and mom, they were hitting hybrids from the tees 15 yards closer and my dad was hitting a 6 iron or something.
I know it's a different comparison, me vs my wife and 72 year old parents and yours is with pro's, but it just goes to show, everyone is different.
