Golfing attire

First, a word about clothing: all jokes about golfing attire aside, there are some rules to observe. A good rule of thumb is: the more expensive the course, the more restrictive their dress code will be. For all but the most relaxed public courses, there is a dress code for golfers, and this code nearly always applies to their non-golfing friends who are tagging along. Denim jeans are permitted at some public courses, but nearly all private courses ban denim completely, as well as shorts for men. Shirts for men are required as well. I supposed it goes without saying that they are not optional for women.

Shirts should have a collar, and many courses do not allow t-shirts. You would be surprised at how much money courses can make selling collared shirts for those who come unprepared. Should there be any doubt, a quick phone call can clear things up.

Things to Avoid:

  • Running shorts
  • Halter tops
  • T-Shirts (especially those with logos)
  • Cutoff shorts
  • Jeans
  • Sleeveless shirts
  • Swimwear
  • Tank tops
  • Short pants (for men)
  • Short shorts (for women)
  • Shoes with metal cleats
  • High heels
  • Boots (or any shoe that would damage a green)
  • Sweat pants
  • Nudity

To play it safe:

  • Men
    • Collared shirts
    • Slacks (and occasionally shorts)
    • Sweaters
    • Windbreaker
  • Women
    • Collared shirts
    • Slacks
    • Sleeveless shirts (with collar)
    • Knee-length shorts
    • Sweaters
    • Windbreaker

The more exclusive clubs will have a very proscribed dress code. It is clear that people judge based on appearances, and most places will not take someone very seriously if they show up in jean shorts and a T-shirt.

Shoes:

Golf cleats are no longer required (and metal cleats banned) at most courses. Golf shoes with rubber or plastic cleats, or a good pair of tennis shoes or cross-trainers will also serve well. Some courses allow special golf-sandals, though you may be required to wear socks with them. Many public courses might only require that the shoes have flat soles, but boots and high heels are out.
