The Bull At Pinehurst Farms - 07/14/2008 - danperry
Great layout, and almost on par with the Kohler courses, yet 1/3 of the price. Full review here: http://danperry.com/wordpress/bull-pinehurst-farms-review/

Hemlock Golf Club - 07/14/2008 - danperry
A little tough to get to, and lots of mosquitoes, but with enough Deep Woods Off, it made for a great round of golf. Very interesting layout. Full review here: http://danperry.com/wordpress/hemlock-golf-review/

Impressed with the way I was treated. Not cheap to play, but they don't cut corners, so it's worth it.

Big Run Golf Course - 07/14/2008 - danperry
Kind of tough to get to (for me at least), but easily one of the best tracks around, from a scenic perspective. Very few courses like this at this price range in the state.

Grand Traverse Resort and Spa - 03/14/2008 - danperry
My wife and I stayed at the Grand Traverse Resort, and played both golf courses (The Bear, a Jack Nicklaus design, and The Wolverine by Gary Player.) We were impressed with the resort itself, and the view from our room was great. For those regular readers of my reviews, you know it’s all about the golf, so let’s start with The Bear. The Bear is considered the harder course of the two, and for good measure. Even the opening hole is a toughie. What I really liked about The Bear was that after the first couple holes, you are almost hidden from civilization (not unlike a lot of other Michigan golf courses). Starting with the third hole, you meander into an area that is as serene as it gets. Rest of review here: http://danperry.com/wordpress/bear-golf-course-review/

Boyne Highlands Golf Courses - 12/20/2007 - danperry
We played the Heather Golf Course a couple of days after the 95th Annual Michigan Amateur Championships. This was good and bad. The good: The golf course was in pristine condition, and the sand in the bunkers was “tour sand”, which actually had a crisper feel on contact, and allowed for better backspin. The bad: The rough hadn’t been cut, so anything out of the fairway was painful, to say the least. In the end, Kate wasn’t a particular fan of this course, but she did spend a lot of time in the rough, so it’s understandable. There’s a reason why this course was selected to host a Michigan Amateur: It’s tough. The first few holes provide a good start to what’s going to be a challenging round. The first par 3 (4th hole) is all carry over water, and when we played, the pin was in the front. No need to ask; yes, I did get wet. Arcadia Bluffs Golf Club - 12/09/2007 - danperry
I played Arcadia Bluffs with my wife (Kate) in June of 2006. The funny thing about this course is that it is built about a half hour north of where I grew up (Manistee). I never imagined that a course of this caliber would be located so close to my hometown. Now I have an additional reason to take the 5-hour drive to visit my parents! We played in the early afternoon, teeing off around 1, so we had plenty of time beforehand to peruse the golf shop, which had some very nice, distinct items (Kate was already thinking of Christmas presents, so we left with a bagful). We also had time for lunch, and it was definitely a few steps above most clubhouse fare. Lots of choices too. If you go save time for lunch before or after your round.
