Alan_avatar Oh where oh where can my golf game be? (to the Pearl Jam song)

...golf gods took it away from me.
All I can say is, I have gone form a 5.3 index to a major hack, with a backswing that has the club strapped along my back, below shoulder level, all in less than 6 months.
I went from shooting a 75 (my best round ever) to struggling to shoot 94, to find a fairway with my driver, and to being ridiculed and shown “real” concern by my regular golf buddies.
I am miffed, embarrassed and wondering whether I need to go take my first lessons in 24 years. I have always been a “feel” player, always had confidence to go out there and work my way around the course, no matter how I was feeling. Now, I am questioning every swing element, lacking confidence or vision to hit any shot, and find myself on the verge of giving up nine holes in.
It is terrible let me tell you. I long for the days when I stared at golf course photos with the enthusiasm of a young boy ready for his first kiss. Now, I don’t look. I have lost my Mojo, and I must get it back.
Four years removed from a life-altering trip to Scotland and the home of golf, and I can’t find my game. Oh where, oh where can my golf game be?
There must be others like me. If so, share with me your inspiring words and experiences. Anything to help me out of this deep, deep hole.
    Help!!

    Alan_avatar New Sticks!

Just picked up set of Armour Silver Scot Froged Cavity Back irons…for $199! A steal…they cam out about a year ago and I tested them at the PGA show, they combine the benefits of game improvement irons, with the feel and look of traditional blades.
I got ‘em at proshopwarehouse.com and I could not be happier.

    Alan_avatar My New Driver!

Ok, so I bit the bullet, got fitted, and was able to put the first few swings on my brand new driver this weekend.
I have always gone big name brand at the local big retailer, but I was not fond of hearing another tale about how a solid fitting and the right head/shaft can really make a difference. Granted, I could have gone to GolfSmith I guess and had them them pull together the brands they offer, but I decided to go another route.
Down the Peninsula to Bay Golf at a great golf practice/soccer field complex south of SFO. It was there I met Matt Coe, Master Club Fitter and also Head Golf Coach for the College of Notre Dame. After a few corrections to my fast, agressive take away, he had me testing out a variety of club/shaft combos and monitord my progress.
Needless to say, what I have in my hand today is a KZG Gemini II with dual-face thikness and a Fujikura 360 S shaft. BOOOOOOOM! Well, that is what it feels like if I can remember to put a smooth swing on it. I can tell you after 30 or so balls off the new face, that I am going to get the hang of swinging easy and have a lot of fun doing it. (Swing Thought – let the technology do the work)
Will be sure to keep you posted as I test it on the links. If your in the Bay Area, I recommend paying a visit to Matt at Bay Golf. Be sure to try their killer burritos in the lounge.

Alan_avatar The Trail to Bandon Dunes

As I head north from the Bay Area this week, I find myself not drawn to the turkey dinner my mom will soon be serving, rather two hours west on the gorgeous coast of Oregon in a little town called Bandon.
Sure the cooking will be less than I have come to expect from my mom, but throw in a round at Pacific Dunes (rain or no rain), a Partagas Torpedo, and an after the round series of Scotch samplings, and I think I would have all I needed to be able to be thankful.
I love mom, but the fact she moved 2 hours away from a “Scottish like” golf mecca is pure torture. Last year during my trip in mid-December, I enjoyed sunny skies for four straight days, sub-50 degree weather, frosted fields of green until Noon, and not a known playing patner in site …..and it was heaven. It is as close as I have come to replicating the zen-like vibe I was blessed to find in St. Andrews a few years back.
So, as I prep the car to head North tomorrow, I find myself hiding the clubs in the trunk, with the hopes I can escape for a “day of holiday shopping” alone…...I figure a 10 hour day at the mall is all the time I need to hit the coast, play a round, have a wee-Scotch, and make it back in time for more couch time with family.
    Wish me luck!

Alan_avatar New Ryder Cup Points System

Now that the Zinger is in command, what about the new points system. All based on a earnings and havily weighted towards the top events.
Does this make sense? Will this produce the to players at year end? And, what about the FOUR , 4, FORE captains picks? I like it.
Anyone else have a thought. The winter is upon us, and I plan on getting my fix of golf talk right here on GolfBuzz. Please join me.

    Alan_avatar What happened to O'Meara?

Mark that is. Two-time Major Winner, close pal of El Tigre, recently passed over in Ireland in favor of another single Major winner. What gives?
When will Mark get his shot? Is he not looked upon favorably …seems like a good guy, or has he not lobbied hard enough.
Now I love Azinger, with his strong grip and home-made swing, but are there not a few other more deserving players who can captain this team? Or, as always does it come down to moohla, dinero, the big bucks to see these two (Azinger and Faldo) duel it out at the Cup as they did in the booth with their competing wits.
Whatever it is, whoever it is, let’s hope the US can find a way to compete in ‘08.

Alan_avatar The FedEx Cup is coming!

The new season is a few shorts months away and thus the FedEx Cup is born. A NASCAR style year-long race with huge $$$ implications and season ending race called the Fall Finish.
Is this what golf needs? Will this generate the excitement for the game that seems to be lacking when Tiger is not in the hunt? We will see.
Personally, I like it…because while Tiger is “the man”, the game is much more, and the Tour probably realized the need to generate excitement beyond his involvemet. Whether it works or not is another story…wait and see.
What I do know is that when I was growing up, I loved Bill Rogers (who?) Tom Watson, Trevino, Floyd and Wadkins, all big names, but that is because the Tour was about the game and they all played the game brilliantly.
Today, are their kids out there that are fans beyond Tiger? There needs to be, and I long for the glory days of golf….maybe Greg Norman was spot on with is commets about Tiger’s dominance being bad for the game.
Rambling a bit. What do you think? From Fed Ex to the state of the game, to Tiger….

Alan_avatar DLIII back in the swing of things.

So, is that what it takes? Do our top American players need to miss out on the Ryder Cup to get energized, and focused enough to win a 3rd tier tourney on the PGA.
What is the deal? DLIII is still one of our top players, but he has all but given up winning a big event (3years since his Players Victory), why is that?
Is it the Tiger effect, is there just too much money for finishing top 10. On the Euro tour, prize money is only 3-5 hundred K, which is a 3-5 place finish on the PGA Tour. Have our players become comlacent, do they lack the hunger to compete?
    Any thoughts?

    Alan_avatar Golf Kapalua

The Plantation Course is awe inspiring. The elevation changes, the panoramic views and the speedy greens, all do well to take your mind off the winds that could drive a lesser man crazy.

I remember watching a trick shot artist hit a rubber hose shafted driver 250 dead straight into the St. Andrews gale force winds, and remembered his swing thought…..keep it smooth and loose.

Swing too hard, and the wind will grab your ball like a cloud and move it quickly. Swing smooth and loose, and watch it bore thru the wind.

Kapalua is beautiful, the staff is top notch, the course is in terrific shape, and you can clearly see why the worlds best come each January to try and topple Stu Appleby. The wind keeps you cool and forces you to think your way thru each shot which is just the kind of cerebral test I enjoy.

Have you played Kapalua? Tell us about it. Also, be sure to test yourself next time on the Bay Course (great ocean fronting holes) and the soon to be renovated Village Course (Fazio ‘07).

Look forward to getting back and hearing your thoughts.

    Alan_avatar Hawaii Golf

The wind is blowing, the sun is rising, and the view of the Plantation Course at Kapalua is calling my name. The Crenshaw/Coor design, yep, the one you see each year for the start of the year Mercedes Championship is a bear of a course. It challenges every aspect of your game, and since mine is in disaray at the the time of this entry, I will be teeing it up at least one up from the tips.

I can only hope those refreshing winds that whip the course stay down under 20 MPH today. Although, why play such a great course, if not to take with it all it has to offer. The view of the great blue is visible from every hole, and I can hardly wait to get out there and see what my game has to give.

Have you played this terrific track? If so, read along as I retrace my round, and share your own experience.

Talk to you after my afternoon 18.
